Tzu Chi Foundation reaches deal for 5 million Pfizer vaccines (2021/07/21)

The Tzu Chi Foundation, a major Buddhist organization based in Hualien, has signed a deal to buy 5 million doses of the Pfizer COVID vaccine. The doses will be donated to Taiwan's government for distribution. Tzu Chi said the deal was reached with the German manufacturer's Chinese sales agent, the same way that TSMC and Hon Hai bought 10 million Pfizer doses last month. Let's hear from the Executive Yuan.

    Lo Ping-cheng
    Executive Yuan spokesperson
Tzu Chi Foundation, the donating party, prepared the legal documents around 8 o’clock this morning and submitted them for review by the donation recipient, the Centers for Disease Control of the Ministry of Health and Welfare. Our colleagues immediately carried out the relevant administrative processes. After 10 a.m., CDC Director General Chou signed the agreement to finalize the process. The Tzu Chi Foundation, TSMC and Hon Hai with the Yonglin Foundation will each donate 5 million vaccine doses. That makes for a total of 15 million Pfizer vaccine doses. The CDC will then file a joint EUA application to the FDA. The three donors – TSMC, Hon Hai with the Yonglin Foundation, and the Tzu Chi Foundation – have demonstrated their public spirit and selflessness. The government would like to once again express its gratitude and admiration. The government will continue working together with private enterprises so that the vaccines are delivered smoothly and administered to the people, and reach our goal of protecting the health of all our citizens.

With the latest donation from the Buddhist group, Taiwan now expects to receive a total of 15 million Pfizer vaccines. The government says that Taiwan's Pfizer vaccine rollout will include minors aged 12 and older.
