The deputy assistant secretary of state and his delegation met a warm reception from President Tsai this morning. On behalf of the U.S., Busby is in Taiwan to attend the first edition of the Indo-Pacific Democratic Governance Consultations and promote democracy in the region.

    Tsai Ing-wen
Utilizing our successful experience under the Global Cooperation and Training Framework, we hope to use these consultations as a platform for regular exchanges to coordinate policies and formulate cooperative programs. This platform will allow us to share our experiences and successes in democratic governance with regional partners, and help foster good governance in the Indo-Pacific.

Touching on Taiwan’s experience, President Tsai said there should be more attention paid to the impact of disinformation.

    Tsai Ing-wen
As you all know, tactics used to spread disinformation have continued to evolve in recent years, impacting stable development in the region. That is why it is now more important than ever that democratic countries come together to face these challenges.

Tsai said Taiwan would join forces with the international community to fight fake news and defend freedom, democracy, and human rights. The U.S. official’s visit has been seen as yet another sign of Washington’s warm ties with Taiwan.
