Hualien magistrate tops approval ratings polls, Kinmen best place to live (2012/05/16)

Taiwan’s happiest place to live is Kinmen. That’s according to a poll conducted by the Taiwan Competitiveness Forum. The poll also asked people about the performance of local government heads, giving top billing to Hualien County Commissioner Fu Kun-chi.

The Taiwan Competitiveness Forum has released its latest happiness index. The poll included a look at approval ratings of local government heads. Hualien County Commissioner Fu Kun-chi placed first, followed by Tainan Mayor William Lai, Miaoli County Commissioner Liu Cheng-hung, Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chu and Changhua County Commissioner Cho Po-yuan.

Hualien County has many financial problems, but it works hard to promote healthy meals for junior high and elementary school students. Throughout the year, County Commissioner Fu personally gives mid- to low-income households cooking oil and rice.

We are children of the poor. We face hardships, but we use hard work to replace the resources we are missing.

Other local government heads didn’t do so well. At the bottom was Taichung Mayor Jason Hu, Penghu County Commissioner Wang Chien-fa, New Taipei Mayor Eric Chu and Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin. In last place was Keelung Mayor Chang Jung-tung.

The poll mentioned how dense populations and poor environmental quality lowered happiness in big cities. Kinmen does not suffer from these problems and was rated as the happiest place to live in Taiwan. The outlying island was also helped by the Kinmen Kaoliang Liquor company. Its strong performance has brought wealth to the area, filling people’s pockets and making them feel more satisfied.
