Rumors renewed as Terry Gou, James Soong, and Ko Wen-je make joint appearance (2019/10/10)

The Taipei City government held a flag-raising ceremony Thursday to celebrate National Day. This year Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je was joined by Hon Hai founder Terry Gou and People First Party leader James Soong. The rare joint appearance added fuel to the speculation that the trio is forging a third force for the 2020 elections.

Ko and Gou led a group into the square at Taipei City Hall for a flag-raising ceremony. Behind them were members of Ko’s Taiwan People’s Party.

A few seconds later, People First Party Chairman James Soong joined the ceremony. His impromptu appearance fueled rumors of a possible alliance with Ko.

This must have been arranged by Deputy Mayor Huang Shan-shan. Actually, we get along very well. You all always claim that he’s not happy with me. We are actually fine.

Shrouded in speculation, the trio stood together to sing the national anthem. Soong left before Ko began his National Day address. The PFP chairman holds the key to nominating a third presidential candidate through his party, so his interactions with Ko and Gou have been closely watched. Gou said he wouldn’t be teaming up with the orange camp.

I’m not going to run. I’m not running. What’s all this about joining forces? Let’s have some good legislators come in to make a better legislature for Taiwan.

Gou said he had no intentions of partnering with the orange camp. He’s also been distancing himself from the KMT. Gou didn’t attend the KMT party central’s flag-raising ceremony, heading instead to a ceremony in Taoyuan.

We must support the R.O.C. I hope that every future leader, whoever it may be, identifies with this flag. Only by identifying with this flag, can one identify with our country. And that’s the only way that we, the people, will be able to hand the flag over to them with our hearts at ease.

Onstage, former KMT lawmaker Sun Ta-chien chanted slogans supporting Han Kuo-yu for president. Gou did not join the cheering.
