NGOs advocate for 180 days of ‘long-term care leave’ (2019/05/16)

Civic groups are lobbying the government to let employees take leave to look after elderly family members. The Ministry of Labor says it will invite labor groups, employers and experts to deliberate on the matter by the end of June.

The civic groups are asking for 180 days of "long-term care leave" modeled after Japanese work regulations. They're asking that employees get 60% of their salary for the first 30 consecutive days of leave. The remaining 150 days would be flexible unpaid leave. The activists say the program would boost employee retention, as staff would be less likely to resign to care for elderly relatives.
