Officials ramp up fight as invasive fall armyworms found in Yilan, Chiayi (2019/06/12)

A national campaign is underway to control the spread of the fall armyworm, which can destroy crops including corn, rice and sorghum. Officials have confirmed the discovery of fall armyworms in Yilan and Chiayi, just days after the invasive insect was first sighted in Miaoli County. Agriculture officials say that seven more reports of sightings of the pest are pending confirmation.

The Council of Agriculture is leading efforts to destroy affected crops and spray fields with insecticide. Officials say they will set up a dedicated task force to combat the invasion. To encourage locals to report fall armyworm sightings, the COA will offer NT$10,000 for the first confirmed case in every lot of farmland. Officials will make subsidies available to farmers whose crops have to be destroyed.
