Debate on extradition bill delayed as clashes erupt on Hong Kong street (2019/06/12)

Hong Kong's Legislative Council has postponed its debate over a controversial bill that would allow crime suspects to be sent to China for trial. The bill was due to go up for a second reading this morning. Ahead of the scheduled session at 11 a.m., Legislative Council President Andrew Leung said the debate was postponed and that members would be notified of the new time later.

Protesters had started gathering the night before and by day, some tens of thousands of people had amassed by the Legislative Council Complex. Clashes broke out in the afternoon, with police using water cannons, tear gas, and batons on protesters trying to storm the parliament building. Hong Kong police said the use of force was justified to control what they called a "riot situation." In Hong Kong, rioting is punishable by 10 years in prison.
