President Tsai pans Ma’s ‘new three noes’ proposal (2018/11/09)

During his time in office, former president Ma Ying-jeou went by the "three noes" policy, vowing that he would not declare independence, not accept unification, nor use force to resolve cross-strait issues. This week, Ma proposed an updated version. In his new proposal, or the "new three noes," he says that, in fact, Taiwan should rather "not OPPOSE unification." Today President Tsai Ing-wen said "NO" to Ma's "three new noes," saying he was holding Taiwan back and harming national sovereignty.

On the third anniversary of his meeting with Xi Jinping, former president Ma Ying-jeou redefined his "three noes" cross-strait policy that he had sworn by in the past.

The "no unification, no independence and no use of force" policy fits within the constitutional framework of the R.O.C. and maintains the status quo on the Taiwan Strait.

    Former president
For the future of cross-strait relations, we cannot discard unification as an option, but we should absolutely not promote Taiwan independence. That is to say, we should follow the principles of "not being against reunification, no independence and no use of force," in order to maintain peaceful and stable cross-strait development.

    Tsai Ing-wen
Bringing up the "new three noes" at this moment is sending the wrong message to not only China, but also to the international community. It's saying that Chinese suppression has proven effective, and that the Taiwanese people will give in. For former president Ma to say this at such a time truly is very inappropriate. It feels like he's trying to keep us from moving forward.

President Tsai attended an industry event today and afterward addressed Ma's proposal in a rare sit-down with press.

    Tsai Ing-wen
The "new three noes" he put forth are actually an even bigger concession. I think that it's not the time or place for him to bring up his "new three noes," because it has greatly hurt the sovereignty of Taiwan.

Ma's proposal comes at a critical time just before the local elections. KMT candidates have been conspicuously silent on the matter, in a bid to keep controversy at bay.
