Average life expectancy reaches record high of 80.7 years (2019/09/11)

New data shows that Taiwanese are living longer than ever. The Ministry of the Interior reports that the average life expectancy reached a record high of 80.7 years in 2018. That puts Taiwan behind Japan and South Korea, but ahead of most Asian countries, including China and Malaysia. The government says life expectancy has increased steadily over recent years, due to improvements in healthcare and food safety.

These exercising seniors are as spry as any young adult. The latest data shows that Taiwanese are living longer than ever. At 80.7 years, the life expectancy is higher than the global average.

For men, it's 77.5 years. For women, it's 84 years. Those are record figures for both sexes. Males are living eight years longer - Taiwanese males are living eight years longer than the global average. Women are living about 10 or so years longer than the global average.

Among Asian countries, Japan has the highest life expectancy at 84.3 years, followed by Singapore at 83.2 years. South Korea ranks third with 82.7 years, ahead of Taiwan at No. 4 with 80.7 years. In Taiwan, the average Taipei resident can expect to live 83.63 years, the most in the country. Longevity goes down the farther south you go. Taitung County had the lowest average expectancy, of 75.79 years.

The main reason, of course, is that the east and west of Taiwan differ in terms of ease of transportation and the availability of medical resources. The two sides have different cultural characteristics. There are differences in lifestyle habits and attitudes toward healthcare. Things like that.

Taiwan's life expectancy has climbed steadily from 80 years in 2016, to 80.4 in 2017 to 80.7 years in 2018. The Ministry of the Interior says the increase is linked to improvements in healthcare and food safety.
