Personal information on 2,900 Taiwanese found in Zhenhua Data leak (2020/09/16)

A China-based tech company called Zhenhua Data was found to have compiled a massive database of personal information on at least 2.4 million people around the world. And information on at least 2,900 Taiwanese individuals was discovered in the database. These people range from former presidents and ministers, to lawmakers and entertainers.

According to records recovered by an Australian cybersecurity firm, Zhenhua Data had compiled a database on people around the world. Two point four million personal profiles were recovered, including those of U.S. President Donald Trump and former Japan Prime Minister Abe Shinzo. The database also included 2,900 Taiwanese nationals, but they did not include President Tsai Ing-wen or former Kaohsiung Mayor Han Kuo-yu.

Chen Yu-chen
KMT lawmaker
Of course it’s undemocratic behavior. But pretty much every country in the world has this kind of surveillance.

Cheng Yun-peng
DPP lawmaker
From this incident, we can see that their intelligence gathering operations on Taiwan far exceed our imagination. It goes beyond the scope of what the Taiwan government can do. In that regard, there’s a threat to our national security that we’ll do our best to circumvent.

The database contains a range of Taiwan figures in politics, trade and entertainment. They include Minister of Foreign Affairs Joseph Wu, National Security Bureau Deputy Director-General Hu Mu-yuan, former President Ma Ying-jeou, People First Party Chairman James Soong, the wife of TSMC’s chairman Sophie Chang, entertainer Kenji Wu, former President Lee Teng-hui’s granddaughter Lee Kun-yi, and lawmakers including the DPP’s Tsai Yi-yu. Independent lawmaker Freddy Lim is not in the database, but his wife, Doris Yeh, is.

Freddy Lim
Independent lawmaker
She is much more well-known than me internationally, so neither of us was shocked about the list. This large-scale systematic surveillance of everyone in the world through economic and technological means is something I think is extremely dangerous.

Tsai Yi-yu
DPP lawmaker
China was monitoring all that information… Although we don’t know how they came up with the list, I’ve seen the reports on this and I’m not scared.

The lawmaker says he has nothing to fear. But the data leak has raised outcry over privacy violations, and suspicions that the data was gathered for illegal ends.
