Banks, travel agencies unveil deals for voucher holders (2020/06/03)

Businesses are hoping for a burst of revenue starting next month, when the Executive Yuan releases its NT$3,000 economic stimulus vouchers. Already some businesses have announced promotions to attract consumers with vouchers. One national bank will grant a cash bonus for loading the vouchers onto its credit card, and one travel agency wants to attract consumers with a voucher of its own.

Ahead of the launch of the “Triple Stimulus Vouchers,” travel agencies are courting voucher holders with offers of their own. One is offering a NT$3,000 voucher for purchasing certain accommodation packages. The voucher can be redeemed in your next booking if a minimum amount is spent.

Once travelers book a package, they are immediately entitled to a NT$3,000 voucher. They can use the government’s vouchers or cash to purchase the room packages on offer now. Stay with the hotel for 24 hours for a good night’s sleep and a pleasant stay.

Businesses are taking aim at consumers with vouchers to spend. They’re counting on a surge of travel interest as the epidemic tapers off.

In Hualien, Taitung and Pingtung, accommodation bookings have grown tenfold since the lowest point during the pandemic.

A five-star hotel has also launched offers to attract customers with “triple vouchers.” Order a 4-person roast duck set meal at its on-site restaurant and get a NT$1,000 discount if you pay with a voucher. That’s like getting 27% off.

We expect growth of 30%, more or less. After the triple voucher program starts, we expect revenue to exceed that of the same period last year.

Over in the financial sector, some banks have launched offers too. One bank is offering NT$1,000 to clients applying for a new credit card. If you use that card for the voucher program, you’ll get NT$2,000 from the government plus an extra NT$300 from the bank. Be among the first 10,000 to apply for a credit card, and you’ll get another NT$100.

There are many hotels in Taiwan that have launched offers of 25% off or 15% off. If you pay for a hotel booking and spend NT$3,000, and you also qualify for Taishin’s early bird promotion, then you won’t have to pay a penny out of pocket.

The Financial Supervisory Commission is encouraging banks to offer their own promotions. Cathay United is giving clients 3,000 points for every NT$1,000 spent. If you load the vouchers onto an EasyCard, you’ll be able to pay for public transport and collect rebates with no expiration date.
