Farewell salute to Huey choppers after 50-year career (2019/10/30)

The UH-1H Iroquois helicopter, nicknamed the Huey, took to Taichung's skies for the last time on Wednesday before its decommissioning. The military chopper first entered service nearly 50 years ago. It has since been deployed in missions including disaster relief after the Jiji earthquake. Pilots gathered at a ceremony to bid farewell to the old soldier, which was honored with a traditional water salute.

Three UH-1H Iroquois lead the way to their decommissioning ceremony. They are followed by nearly 30 other military helicopters, including UH-60 Black Hawks and AH-64 Apache. Stretching for 2 kilometers across the sky, they fly in formation to send off their old comrade.

A handover between pilots, then a traditional water salute. After making its way past the arcs of water, the Huey is declared officially decommissioned.

    Chang Wei-chen
    UH-1H pilot
As the battalion commander of this last cohort, I’m very happy to be taking part in the decommissioning ceremony.

Beginning in 1969, Taiwan had worked with U.S. contractors to procure 127 Huey choppers for the R.O.C. Army and Air force. The Huey served important missions, including rescues after major natural disasters. But with the development of newer models and piling upkeep costs, the Huey will be rising to the skies no more.

    Liao Ming-chi
    UH-1H crew chief
It’s been 19 years since I joined the military. I have worked with UH-1Hs this whole time. To be honest, they are more like a wife than my wife.

    Li Wei-hao
    UH-1H pilot
This aircraft is very easy to fly. The livery is still in OK condition. I’ll keep the helicopter alive in my mind. That way I won’t feel so sad.

With fond memories, these former Huey pilots will embark on new missions with newer models. As for the UH-1H, it’s retiring from service with full honors.
