Tibetan exiles afforded chance to stand on home soil (2011/10/28)

Tibetan exiles finally had a chance to stand on the soil of their homeland. A New York artist smuggled 22 tons of dirt from Tibet and spread it over a stage in a refugee community. He then allowed Tibetans to walk and play in the soil, many of them savoring it for the first time.

When Tibetans living in exile in India heard that dirt from their homeland had been transported to their new home of Dharamsala, they came out in droves. They knelt, they prayed and they brought pictures of their spiritual leader the Dalai Lama to the scene.

Tibetan PM-in-exile
I’m asked to step on the soil, which I did, and I’m looking forward to the day when I can walk on the land of Tibet, where freedom will be restored, and his holiness Dalai Lama will be in Lhasa, the capital city of Tibet.

The 22 tons of soil was secretly transported to India by New York resident Tenzing Rigdol, who for safety reasons didn’t disclose his methods. The 29-year-old artist then spread the soil over a stage at this school. Rigdol says he made the installation for artistic reasons. It’s particularly special to him because his late father was one of 150,000 Tibetans living in exile.

Tibetans in Dharamsala can visit the installation for the three days it’s open. After it closes, they will be able to take some of the soil home.
