    Bumper plum harvest provides lots of pick-your-own opportunities (2021/05/03)

    It’s plum season, and that means time for lots of picking and lots of pickling. Let’s head now to a farm in Taitung where the cold winter has created a bumper plum harvest. To help aging farmers handle the glut of fruit, visitors are invited to come and pick their own plums, while enjoying a peaceful day in the orchard.

    The trees are laden with juicy green plums. Pick-your-own visitors wander among the trees with baskets, choosing ripe fruit to pickle.

    You remove the plums’ stems with tooth picks, wash and dry them. Then they’re placed into glass jars with sugar, to create fermented plum juice.

    We want to get tourists to come here and get close to nature. Apart from picking fruit here, you can also receive the experience of the whole ecology.

    Taitung is the third largest plum producing region in Taiwan. In Chishang池上Township alone, plum orchards cover 40 to 50 hectares of land. The fruit is in season from April to early May. The numerous cold spells this year caused a spike in the harvest, but due to the water shortage, the plums are smaller than usual. A big harvest means lot of work, and visitors are welcome to come and pick their own and enjoy a picnic. Farmers are on hand to show how it’s done.

    The farmer’s getting old and he can’t pick the plums or manage the orchard. Now if it’s arranged well – if they want visitors to come straight here to pick fresh plums, then we’re very happy to support the farmers in this.

    The farming population is aging quickly. In recent years farming associations have promoted farming tourism, allowing visitors to enjoy rural life and giving elderly farmers a hand in the busy season.

    「寒流+乾旱」結果率高果實小農民開放遊客採梅

    台東是台灣第三大梅子產區,每年4月中到5月初是產季,今年年初幾波寒流,加上碰到大乾旱,梅子結果率高,但果實太小,導致農民採收成本增加。農會輔導農民轉型,開放遊客採收梅子,體驗農村樂趣。

    樹上結滿一顆顆綠色梅子,遊客在果園裡聽著導覽,一手拿提籃,另一手採下已經成熟的果實,等一下要拿來醃梅子。

    拿竹籤去掉梅子的蒂頭,仔細清洗和擦乾後,一個個放到玻璃瓶裡,加一點糖,就可以做成梅子發酵汁。

    “盡量讓遊客來這邊接近大自然,除了這邊採梅以外、採果之外,都還可以接受一樣這邊的生態。”

    “年紀大了,他無法去採梅子,去管理梅園。那如果好好地把它整理好,或是讓遊客可以直接上來,去採新鮮的梅子,那我們是很願意去輔導這些農民。”

    考量農村人口老化問題,農會近年推廣果園旅遊,讓遊客自己採果,節省人力也能讓遊客多點體驗。
