Taipei mayor’s sit-down with ex-President Lee fuels rumors of presidential run (2018/08/10)

Rumors are surfacing that Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je is considering a run for president in 2020. In an incident that has only fueled the speculation, the Taipei mayor paid a low-key visit to former president Lee Teng-hui last night. Sources say the former president had inquired into Ko's political aspirations and had offered Ko some words of advice.

Taipei’s mayor arrived in style today for an inspection tour of the new Circular Line depot. The day before, Ko had paid a low-profile visit to former president Lee Teng-hui. According to unnamed sources, Lee had asked outright whether the Taipei mayor had aspirations for higher office.

He said it’s strange, he was at the Ta Shee golf club and the young people strolling the grounds said they support Ko. Lee said that in a joking manner.

Lee spoke appreciatively of Ko’s high popularity, but he also advised Ko to watch his words with more care. Lee was referencing the controversy triggered in 2015 when Ko said the two sides of the strait were one family.

He told me that right now I have to focus on municipal affairs. I should say what needs to be said, and not say what shouldn’t be said. Chan Hsi-kui was beside him and he followed that with, “Yes, stop saying the two sides of the strait are one family.”

Only five people had been present at this meeting. Political program host Chan Hsi-kui had reportedly arranged the meeting between Ko and Lee.

Because I entered politics as a non-politician, I have no ties with the politics of the past. So whenever I have time, I visit these political predecessors. Yesterday it so happened that [former] president Lee had the time, so Chan arranged for me to go see him.

The meeting between Ko and the still-influential former president has fanned rumors that Ko is paving the way for a presidential run in 2020.
