Pain from Huawei ban to be short-lived for Taiwan suppliers: researcher (2020/09/15)

Washington's sanctions on Huawei took effect on Tuesday, bringing a full stop to its chip supplies from many Taiwan firms. An analyst says Taiwan's semiconductor supply chain may now undergo a period of restructuring, but that it should be able to pull through unscathed.

I believe that TSMC can expect to benefit in the fourth quarter of this year. Major clients besides Huawei will support its performance. Other Chinese brands have actually started up a procurement grab. They’re taking advantage of Huawei’s vacancy to claim market share. So for Taiwanese manufacturers, our supply chain can look ahead to picking up more orders. In one or two months’ time, our firms will likely start making up the order book.

Washington's sanctions prevent foreign firms from selling to Huawei without a permit, if they use U.S. technology in their products. Taiwan semiconductor firms MediaTek and Nanya Technology have announced that they will seek a permit from the U.S., as required by the new sanctions.
