Ma and Tsai trade gibes over alleged ethical lapses (2011/12/18)

Taiwan’s two main presidential contenders went after each other Saturday in their final debate Saturday and continued the war of words today. At issue was the DPP’s Tsai Ing-wen’s alleged conflict of interest in a biotech joint venture in 2007. President Ma Ying-jeou said presidential candidates should avoid suspicious behavior, while the DPP’s Tsai accused Ma of mobilizing the government to smear her.

A day after the debate, the two candidates continued their mudslinging over the TaiMed case, in which Tsai as vice premier approved the joint venture and then headed it months after leaving her post.

    President Ma Ying-jeou
Chairwoman Tsai, everybody has this many suspicions. Why doesn’t she come out and explain? Why hold a press conference and not allow everybody to ask questions? We did not assume anything. If she believes she’s innocent and that she’s clean and has not violated any laws, then she should stand up.

He is still speaking about the TaiMed case, attacking me. These prove one thing, that for a period of time in the past, the entire government apparatus’s smearing of Tsai Ing-wen was in fact to pave the way to manipulate the election for President Ma.

Tsai also accused the Ma and the KMT of hurting Taiwan’s biotechnology sector with the allegations.

The candidates may be doing their best to pick at each other’s alleged ethical flaws, but it’s unclear how the voters see the mudslinging. Polls released today on who won Saturday’s debate were mixed, but Ma held or extended narrow leads in the overall race in tracking polls conducted by TVBS, the China Times and the United Daily News.
