Energy drinks could affect brain development in children: survey (2019/09/10)

Energy drinks promise a quick pick-me-up, but they could also come with health risks. The John Tung Foundation tested 24 energy drink brands on the market and found that all 24 contained caffeine and high levels of sugar. Nutritionists say that drinking energy drinks over the long term could affect cognitive development in children and teens.

According to a survey from the John Tung Foundation, about 60% of students who have ever had an energy drink said they consumed it for a mental boost. “Tiredness” was cited as a reason by 34%, and 41% cited no reason other than a whim. “Pulling an all-nighter” was cited by 30%. The foundation warned of health risks associated with some of the ingredients of 24 energy drinks on the market.

More than half of the energy drinks contained over 25 grams of sugar. Twenty-five grams is the American Heart Association’s recommended daily intake of sugar for children between 2 and 18. It shouldn’t exceed 25 grams.

But it’s not just the sugar content that’s problematic. Four brands were found to contain over 100 milligrams of caffeine per serving.

If caffeine is ingested over the long term … the brain and cognitive skills of teens and children are still under development. So if they drink energy drinks over the long term, it can affect the development of their brains and cognitive skills.

The Food and Drug Administration regulates applications and the permissible levels of food additives. Its beverage safety standards limit the applications and permissible levels of caffeine used in food.

Nutritionists say that tiredness could be a sign of dehydration. They advise drinking plenty of water and using other ways to stay alert, such as regular exercise and stretching.
