With survival at stake, Huawei gets 4G lifeline from Qualcomm (2020/11/26)

U.S. chip supplier Qualcomm has been awarded a license from Washington to sell 4G processors to Huawei. Since last year, U.S. sanctions have blocked Huawei's access to most chips and other technology that it needs to assemble smartphones. Chips from Qualcomm would help Huawei return to the 4G handset market as early as next spring. Analysts say Taiwan suppliers like TSMC and MediaTek would be key beneficiaries of the comeback.

Amid U.S. sanctions, Huawei has been handed a lifeline. Speaking to Reuters, Qualcomm said it's received a license from Washington to sell 4G chips to the Chinese tech giant. That gives a partial fix to Huawei's chip sourcing woes. It also paves the way for Huawei's return to the global market, where its phone and tablet supplies have fallen short of demand. An analyst says Huawei's 4G comeback will let it retain its overseas bases and buy time as it charts a strategy for 5G.

With regard to the impact of this on the United States - the U.S. feels that 4G isn't an issue, so it's willing to open it up to Huawei. As for Huawei, it had been selling 170 million units before. That massive volume is now down to just 40 million. So looking at this sales volume, it appears that the sanctions' impact on Huawei has been rather significant.

Washington's three rounds of sanctions began in May 2019. The third ban on Huawei started Sept. 15 of this year. It prohibited chip firms that use U.S. tech, including Chinese firms, from selling to Huawei without a license. But with Qualcomm newly approved to supply 4G chips, Huawei is expected to roll out new 4G phones, as early as the first quarter of 2021. Its revived production would give a lift to TSMC, MediaTek, Hon Hai Precision Industry, and other Taiwan firms in its supply chain.

Huawei's return to the 4G market is a bullish signal that will be of help to the Taiex, more or less. Because the record shows, after shipment restrictions came down on Huawei concept stocks - those were blanket restrictions on 4G and smartphone components. But now, there is an opening in the 4G segment. For Taiwanese stocks in Huawei's supply chain, this is a boon.

Amid investor optimism, stocks of printed circuit board supplier Unimicron Technology jumped 7.82% on Thursday, while TSMC edged up 0.41%. Largan Precision and MediaTek also ended higher, while chip designer FocalTech Systems climbed nearly 5%. The weighted index opened higher and gained 0.78% to close above just above 13,845 points. Analysts say that with Huawei back in the game, Taiwan suppliers can look ahead to a bright first quarter next year.
