Taiwan bans Boeing 737 Max from entering airspace (2019/03/15)

Taiwan on Thursday joined dozens of countries that have banned the Boeing 737 Max aircraft. The decision was prompted by Sunday's deadly crash in Ethiopia, which is the second crash in five months to involve Boeing's bestselling passenger jet. Taiwan's ban came into effect Thursday night, and it applies to all 737 Max flights going into or out of Taiwan's airspace.

An Ethiopian Airlines 737 Max 8 crashed six minutes into its flight to Kenya last Sunday, killing all 157 people onboard.
Late last year, a similar incident occurred with a Lion Air flight involving the same aircraft model. In the span of only six months, there have been two fatal crashes involving the Boeing 737 Max 8.

Investigators are looking into possible flaws with the 737's automated anti-stall system. In the meantime, the model has been banned from the airspace of 24 countries across the EU, the U.K., and New Zealand. On Thursday Taiwan's aviation authorities followed suit with its own ban.

Clark Lin
Flight standards division director
U.S. data clearly show that there are similarities between last year's Indonesia's Lion Air 737 Max crash and this latest Ethiopian Airlines crash. The U.S. identified similarities in their preliminary look at the evidence.

Civil Aeronautics Administration has confirmed that none of Taiwan's carriers have the Boeing 737 Max in their fleet. The new ban will pertain to carriers who send the jet through Taiwan's airspace. Taiwan's Far Eastern Air Transport says it's suspended its plan to rent two Boeing 737 Max at the end of this year.

Voice of Jao Tzu-chiang
Former pilot
There is no room at all for accidents or misgivings in aviation. Therefore, banning the model and running comprehensive tests to dispel all doubts before allowing it to fly again … I think this is reasonable. It is a safer approach.

In a statement, Boeing declared its support for the temporary grounding of all 371 Max planes in fleets around the world.
