Taiwan’s representatives in the US are given diplomatic license plates (2015/02/25)

Thirty six years after official US ties with Taiwan were severed, Taiwanese representatives in the US are finally getting diplomatic license plates. Although the color and the style of the license plates are similar to other diplomats, the first letter of the plate is not the same. Former Taiwan representative to the United States Stephen Chen says this distinction means the new license plates are not diplomatic plates after all.

After the Lunar New Year holiday, Taiwan’s de facto embassy in the United States was given new diplomatic license plates issued by the Diplomatic Motor Vehicle Office under the U.S. State Department.

However, the diplomatic license plates issued to other countries typically start with a letter such as D, S, C and A, with the word “Diplomat” clearly written at the top of the plate. Those issued to Taiwan start with the letter “E”, and do not contain the word “Diplomat.”

It is inappropriate to call them “diplomatic license plates” if the plates do not start with the letter of C and D. The U.S State Department fears objections and it can argue these are not diplomatic license plates as they start with the letter “E.”

Former deputy representative to the US, DPP legislator Lee Ying-yuan sees it differently.

The flag-raising ceremony at the Twin Oaks Estate was considered as a flamboyant gesture. So the US government hopes to avoid unexpected surprises like the last time. Now Taiwan-US relations are moving towards positive developments and we hope to share the good news with Taiwanese public through the media.

The flag-raising ceremony at Twin Oaks Estate in Washington DC continues to cause diplomatic ripples between Taiwan and the US, with many closely looking for motives and potential clues behind the new license plate issuance.
