Taiex closes at eight-month high ahead of politically sensitive date (2009/05/19)
The local stock market closed at its highest point since last September Tuesday after a Wall Street rally overnight sparked hopes the global recession is easing, boosting financial shares in particular. Thoughts are now turning to whether the Taiex can break a near-decade-old trend Wednesday after losing ground every May 20 for the past nine years. May 20 is a politically sensitive day as it marks the date presidents in Taiwan are inaugurated.
The boards were awash in red numbers, signaling in Taiwan a bull market, as many financial and construction stocks jumped by the 7-percent daily limit. Cathay Financial, Taiwan's largest listed financial holding firm, surged over 5 percent. The main TAIEX index rose to as high as 6,784 points early in the session but later pared gains as investors grew wary of the market's momentum following recent advances.
At the end of the session, the weighted index closed at 6,655 points, a gain of 1.18% on improved turnover of NT$218 billion.
On the eve of the first anniversary of President Ma Ying-jeou’s inauguration, many investors recall the Taiex’s 2.4% drop on May 20. In fact, that date has seen shares slide every year for the past nine years, following contentious speeches marking the anniversary by former President Chen Shui-bian.

The uncertainty and negative news surrounding that date have gradually diminished, said analyst Cai Zong-yuan. As the Taiex is a multifaceted structure, we’d suggest that investors pull out or take a more diversified approach at this point. Looking at it now, it is still possible the index will push the 6,900 point mark.
The TAIEX has risen 45 percent so far this year, making it one of the top performers in major global markets, but whether it can over come the politically sensitive date, investors will just have to find out Wednesday.

台股拼魔咒
延續前一天亞股獨漲氣勢，加上美股大漲激勵，台股今天開盤就上揚172點，站上6700，只是，從2000年以來，只要碰上520，台股都是下跌作收。不過，分析師信心喊話，今年利空出盡，有望突破魔咒。
漲停、漲停又是漲停，不管是金融還是營建股，都是一片紅通通，加上新科股王晶華，股后宏達電繼續漲。光是國泰，就漲了超過5%。519這天的台股，盤中一度站上6784，創今年新高。
指數最後收在6655點，漲幅1.18%，成交值2187億新台幣。
擔心重演去年520，跌掉2.4%的戲碼，因為過去九年，只要碰上520陳前總統在就職典禮上發表對於兩岸政策的演說，當天台股通通是下跌作收，
