Typhoon downpours refill Shihmen Reservoir to 85% capacity (2018/07/11)

At long last, relief has arrived for Shihmen Reservoir in Northern Taiwan. Rain from Typhoon Maria has replenished the reservoir to 85% capacity. Authorities estimate that the reservoir has gained a tremendous 90 million tons of water from the storm. And better yet, this is relatively clear, low-sediment water that won't elevate the turbidity of the reservoir's supply.

At long last, relief has arrived for Shihmen Reservoir in Northern Taiwan. Rain from Typhoon Maria has restored the reservoir to 85% capacity. Authorities estimate that the reservoir has gained a tremendous 90 million tons of water from the storm. Even better yet, this is relatively clear, low-sediment water that won’t elevate the turbidity of the reservoir’s supply.

Overnight, rainfall from Typhoon Maria lifted the water level of Shihmen Reservoir from the 230-meter mark to 241, adding 90 million tons of water.

    Director Chiang Ming-lang
    Northern Region Water Resources Office
It’s now close to 85% of the water storage capacity. Before, the reservoir had less than 90 million tons, and this amount has nearly doubled. This is a considerable boon to the water supply situation in the Shihmen Reservoir’s Taoyuan area.

Better yet, because the eye of the storm didn’t make landfall, its rain fell at a relatively low velocity. This means that the stormwater was relatively low in sediment and didn’t raise the turbidity of the reservoir water.

    Director Chiang Ming-lang
    Northern Region Water Resources Office
Resources allocated by the storm have vastly improved our water supply situation. We’ll propose to the Water Resources Agency that we switch the current green indicator light to blue.

Typhoon Maria has brought a large and relatively low-turbidity supply of rainwater, offering Shihmen Reservoir relief at last.
