Beijing launches naval drills as President Tsai prepares for state trip (2018/08/10)

President Tsai Ing-wen leaves on Sunday for a state visit to Paraguay and Belize. Less than 48 hours before her departure, China launched naval exercises in the Yellow Sea. The drills began this evening and will be conducted for three days.

In April, China held drills in Fujian province's Quanzhou Bay, while Tsai was on a state visit to Africa. Pan-green lawmakers say this week's drills are similar in that they're politically motivated, and aimed at creating a sense of threat. The Taiwan government says it has a firm grasp on China's military activity and emphasizes that there is no cause for concern.
