Al Jazeera report links pro-unification groups to Chinese money (2018/09/13)

China's tactics for infiltrating Taiwan have drawn attention from foreign media. This month, Qatar-based news outlet Al Jazeera aired a 25-minute undercover report called "Spies, Lies and Cross-Strait Ties." In the report, members of the pro-unification Patriot Alliance Association in Taiwan admitted that their funding could be traced back to China. The Al Jazeera report also connected one pro-unification group to organized crime.

It’s a common sight at landmarks like Taipei 101 or the Ximending district: groups of people shouting slogans about unification and goading on the public. Recently, the news network Al Jazeera conducted an investigation on these pro-unification groups, disclosing their dark secrets.

Chang Hsiu-yeh
Patriot Alliance Association
Whoever gets caught taking money from China will be put in jail. It’s not a problem if it’s money from a Taiwanese businessman. Authorities in China know which businesses support unification. They’ll do their best to make sure you don’t lose money.

Al Jazeera reporters went undercover into the pro-unification camp and were able to confirm that Beijing was funding the Patriot Alliance Association. They also made an unexpected discovery.

Pro-unification activist
Why have they joined the party? There is only one reason. To whitewash their reputations. They can have a sign that says they’re a China Unification Promotion Party branch office. But inside it’s a triad branch.

To some Taiwanese researchers, Al Jazeera’s findings come as little surprise.

Fan Shih-ping
Politics professor
China has long been financially involved with pro-unification parties and other groups. It didn’t just start over the last one, two years. During the eight years of the Ma administration, they probably didn’t think it was a problem. But with President Tsai Ing-wen in office, people think it’s a problem, and that’s why they’ve begun to investigate.

Al Jazeera’s report is the latest picture of Taiwan as it continues to come under direct and covert pressure from Beijing.
