Presidential Office releases historic footage of Lee Teng-hui ahead of memorial service (2020/09/15)

A memorial service for the late President Lee Teng-hui will be held at Aletheia University's chapel in New Taipei on Saturday. Ahead of the ceremony, the Presidential Office released historic footage of Lee on its official website. One shows Lee in 1991, announcing the abolition of the Temporary Provisions against the Communist Rebellion.

Another shows him in 1995, hosting a ceremony for the formation of an IDF fighter squad at Taichung's Ching Chuan Kang Air Base. There's also him speaking at Cornell University that same year, before becoming Taiwan's first democratically elected president in 1996. Lee's memorial on Saturday will be attended by President Tsai Ing-wen, who will present him with a posthumous presidential citation. His coffin will be covered with the national flag before being sent off on a procession around his former high school, Tamkang senior high.
