Four shipping, shipbuilding firms team up for offshore wind farm (2019/01/10)

Taiwan's offshore wind power industry has new players. Today four companies specializing in shipping and shipbuilding signed a cooperation agreement. CSBC Corporation, Yang Ming Marine Transport, TIPC Marine and Taiwan Navigation will be joining forces to help set up a wind farm off the coast of Changhua.

Four state-invested enterprises have signed a letter of intent to cooperate on an offshore wind power venture.

Taiwan has been building offshore wind power capacity off the coast of Changhua.
The site is seen as a NT$960 billion business opportunity, and the four new entrants are eager to get a foothold in the market.

We hope that Taiwan's own fleet can do its best to be useful to this venture. Some of us have ships. Some have management know-how. Some have personnel.

This is indispensible to the future of our energy security. It should be the consensus of the people. We should keep pushing in this direction.

There's a lot of work that goes into building an offshore wind farm, such as setting up electricity generating stations at sea, maritime shipping, and systems installation. The government is pushing to meet its target for 2025.

MOEA Bureau of Energy director general
If by 2025 we can reach 5.5 gigawatts of installed offshore wind capacity, we would be able to generate 19.8 billion kilowatt-hours of clean power that year. It would account for 7.3 percent of the energy mix.

Eyeing the renewables market, the four ship industry titans have formed a task force dedicated to offshore wind power.
