US market surge seen boosting Taiwan shares at opening session (2019/02/10)

The Taiwan Stock Exchange opens tomorrow for the first time in the Year of the Pig. Analysts are optimistic, saying that Taiwan shares could get a boost tomorrow from the strong performance of U.S. stocks over Spring Festival. But analysts warn that the U.S. and China are slated to reopen their trade negotiations in Beijing tomorrow. Any trouble at the negotiation table could send ripples through the Taiex on opening day.

Since the Taiex ended the Year of the Dog last Wednesday at 9,932 points, the Dow has surged by 526 points, or 2.14 percent. The S&P 500 index and the Nasdaq have also gained ground by 2 to 3 percent, fanning investors hopes that Taiwan shares will soon bounce back to territory above the 10,000 point mark.

Financial analyst
During our market holiday, four major U.S. stock indexes posted gains, and it should give us a bit of a boost. The likelihood of getting back above 10,000 points is quite high.

The market tends to perform well on the first trading day of a new lunar year, with shares closing up in seven out of the past 10 first-day sessions. Analysts believe that in tomorrow's session, the wild card will be the U.S.-China trade war. No truce was reached in the last round of negotiations. A new round begins tomorrow in Beijing, focusing on issues like structural reforms and the intellectual property rights of U.S. companies.

Technological advancement is the primary flashpoint between the two sides. So I feel that they will wade into the deep end in the next round of negotiations - that is to say, they'll be getting into the trickiest part of the talks. Any hiccup during the course of negotiations will affect U.S. stocks. It could even affect the opening of Taiwan's market, because the composition of our index is heavy on ICT.

Experts warn that any hitch will affect U.S. stocks and will add uncertainty to the Taiex's first session in the Year of the Pig.
