President takes exception to opponent being labeled “Robin Hood” (2011/11/20)

President Ma Ying-jeou has hit out at the labeling of his opponent Tsai Ing-wen as Taiwan’s “Robin Hood”. Ma is unhappy with the comparison because the DPP has continued to claim Ma met with an important illegal bookmaker despite his consistent denials.

The DPP’s gathering of political contributions through small plastic piggy banks, labeled the Three Little Pigs, has reignited Tsai Ing-wen’s presidential campaign. As a result, foreign media outlets have even referred to Tsai as Taiwan’s Robin Hood. Unexpectedly, President Ma Ying-jeou used Robin Hood’s name on Sunday. But, when he did, he only wanted to make it clear that he did not meet with major local underground bookmaker Chen Ying-chu on Sept. 10 to ask for a political donation as was claimed in a weekly magazine.

A political party is using this opportunity to create false rumors. Even after we have clarified this matter several times it has not changed its habits. Right here, I am calling on Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen to stop. You say foreign media are calling you Robin Hood. The Robin Hood that I know was chivalrous and robbed the rich to give to the poor. He did not tell lies to blacken the name of others.

I saw our president trying to cloud the issue. Recently, he went to see someone that he should not have met and society has raised suspicions. Now, he is in a rush to blame the opposition parties. Only a person who wants to oppress the people would be afraid if Robin Hood appeared. Robin Hood would be a thorn in his side.

The two leading candidates in an election trading verbal barbs is not new. But, it was a little unexpected that a British folk legend would become the center of an election campaign in Taiwan in 2011.
