Taiwan wins five awards at Asia Pacific Film Fest (2010/12/05)

Taiwan lost out on the big ones but still managed to bag five awards at the Asia Pacific Film Festival, including best music and best artistic direction for the blockbuster Monga. Meanwhile, an appeal from a member of the Korean delegation for Taiwanese not to hate Koreans added a bit of politics to the festivities.

Many of the performances at the 54th Asia Pacific Film Festival in Taipei on Saturday had a vintage feel.

The audience was most eager to see Taiwan’s haul at the awards.

The Taiwanese film “Monga” has received rave reviews. A disappointment came when the film’s star, Ethan Ruan, failed to win in the best actor category. But Monga still won in best music and best artistic direction. Other Taiwanese winners included “Fourth Portrait,” which won for best cinematography, and “Sleeping With Her,” which topped the best short film category. Composer Tu Duu-chih won the Special Contribution award.

Hong Kong’s Jackie Chan won the Outstanding Film Achievement award.

Best film went to the Indian production “Janala.” Iranian superstar Hamid Farrokhnejad won top actor and 84-year-old Filipina actress Anita Linda won for best actress.

A bit of tension was added to the atmosphere when a person accepting an award for the Korean movie “Enlightenment Film” stepped on stage.

“Please tell me there is no Korean judge. Please don’t hate us.”

A backlash in Taiwan occurred recently after Korean officials were blamed for the controversial disqualification of a Taiwanese taekwondo fighter at the Asian Games. These words helped make that issue a key topic of discussion at what had been a lighthearted awards ceremony.
