US cancels Taiwan visit of ambassador to UN Kelly Craft (2021/01/13)
Washington has canceled the Taiwan visit of its ambassador to the U.N., Kelly Craft. Just hours before her scheduled departure, the U.S. state department announced that all official trips it arranged for this week would be canceled, as part of its efforts to ensure a smooth presidential transition. Craft was scheduled to arrive Wednesday and to call on President Tsai Ing-wen the next day.
The Presidential Office and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have released statements conveying regret but also respect for Washington's decision. Former President Ma Ying-jeou remarked publicly on the cancellation, calling it "understandable" and "unsurprising."
