Central bank to mint more NT$10 coins amid claw machine craze (2018/12/06)

The central bank says it has earmarked nearly 1 million NT in its 2019 budget for the minting of 10 NT coins, which are in short supply amid a boom in the popularity of claw machines.

Claw machine fever has swept Taiwan, which has more than 10,000 dedicated arcades. Each coin exchange machine has tens of thousands of 10 NT coins, and countless more are contained in the claw machines themselves. The central bank plans to spend the lion's share of its 2019 currency budget on meeting the surging demand for 10 NT coins.
