Students fleeing Hong Kong start class at NTU on Tuesday (2019/12/02)

Hundreds of students, who have escaped Hong Kong, start class on Tuesday at National Taiwan University. The flagship university and others across the country have signed up to host students fleeing Hong Kong's worsening crisis. About 250 Taiwanese and 170 Hong Kongers have registered to audit classes for free at NTU.

Hong Kong’s crisis had prompted many universities to cut their semesters short. According to the Ministry of Education, 1,021 Taiwanese students in Hong Kong were affected. Six hundred and eighty seven of them have returned to Taiwan, and most of those have chosen NTU.

We’re expecting that most of the Taiwanese visiting students will report for class. As for the students from other regions, we expect a turnout rate of 85%.

NTU said 489 students from Hong Kong have registered to audit its classes. Two hundred and forty-nine of them are from Taiwan, and the rest are from elsewhere. There are 170 Hong Kongers and no Chinese due to paperwork issues. On Dec. 3, the students will begin one month of studies free of tuition, although they will have to pay room and board, along with a NT$600 internet fee. NTU’s president said the incoming students would not infringe upon the rights of local students.

We’re looking at perhaps 300 or 400 people coming in. But let’s note that they are in different years of study. They’ll be going into different colleges, distributed across the many classes of our university. The average increase in student load won’t even be one person per class.

It doesn’t affect me so I don’t have much of an opinion about it. Of course it’s great to be able to help them.

The reality is that most college classes don’t suffer from a lack of space. Only the very popular classes are full.

NTU said the visiting students would not get credits for auditing courses. Instructor’s consent is required before a student may audit a class. As for student transfers, NTU said it would work with the Ministry of Education to announce a plan next semester.
