Health and Welfare Minister Chen Shih-chung to represent Taiwan at WHA, with or without invitation (2017/04/20)

This year's World Health Assembly is scheduled for May 22nd in Geneva, Switzerland, but with only weeks to go before the close of registration, Taiwan has yet to receive an invitation to the international meeting. Some lawmakers accused the Health and Foreign ministries of not doing enough to snag an invite, but Health and Welfare Minister Chen Shih-chung said that wouldn't stop him from traveling to Geneva to speak for Taiwan.

Health and Welfare Minister Chen Shih-chung today faced lawmakers concerned about his ministry's plans to attend the World Health Assembly. There's less than a month left until the event, but Taiwan still hasn't received a formal invitation to attend the meeting.

Since 2009, Taiwan has attended the World Health Assembly as an observer under the moniker "Chinese Taipei." Last year, then-Health and Welfare Minister Lin Tzou-yien only received an invitation to the assembly on the very last day of online registration. With this year's registration deadline approaching, some lawmakers accused the Foreign Ministry of not doing enough to secure the country's spot at the convention.

We currently have very open communication with the WHO. We are planning for any possible arrangement and eventuality.

Basically our current plan is to attend whether or not we receive an invitation, to state our positions and to describe Taiwan's contributions in international medicine.

Chen assured lawmakers that he would lead a team to Geneva, so as not to let Taiwan's doctors and health professionals be excluded from the international community, even if the team cannot take part in the conference.
