Pingtung researchers catch birds of prey on camera at new birdhouse (2021/01/13)
A birdhouse set up in the fields of Pingtung has given local scientists a fascinating view into the life of birds of prey in the area. Experts at National Pingtung University of Science and Technology set up the birdhouse to give raptors somewhere to rest in clear-cut fields with few trees. And the raptors' habit of catching rodents is a big help for farmers. Let's see which visitors the birdcam caught so far.
A collared scops owl peers inquisitively at the camera. What a cutie. The next day, there are two, having a little chat.
Researchers at National Pingtung University of Science and Technology have set up this house for birds of prey in a field near the college. A camera on the house catches everything that goes on, day or night.
Today a black-winged kite comes a-calling, with a big mouse in his beak. A good day's meal. The camera also caught this black drongo swallow down a grasshopper in one gulp.
Hung Hsiao-yu NPUST Institute of Wildlife Conservation Sometimes birds stand on the auto-camera itself, or too close to it. So we made a little thing to put on top to stop them doing that.
The birdhouse is set up in a wide open space, on a branch set near the top of a pole. It stands about 8 meters in the air.
Hung Hsiao-yu NPUST Institute of Wildlife Conservation In a wide open field area like this, birds don't have anywhere to land and rest. So we set up this birdhouse to give them a space to relax on. And we take photos and video to see which birds use it and what they do there.
But the birdhouse has one more function too.
Hung Hsiao-yu NPUST Institute of Wildlife Conservation It attracts birds of prey to the fields, and then they help farmers by catching rodents, so they can rely less on the use of rodent poison.
Researchers say almost all the birds using the installation are indeed birds of prey. The little birdhouse is a win-win-win, for wildlife, researchers, and local farmers.
