Kaohsiung tests use of salt water as a mosquito-killing tool (2014/11/10)

The Kaohsiung Department of Health is testing a pioneering method for fighting dengue fever. Rather than spraying pesticides, it is dumping saltwater into gutters in a bid to kill disease-carrying mosquitoes.

A 5-ton water tank trunk dumps saltwater into a water reservoir at this Cianjhen District harbor.

The water is destined for the gutters of dengue-fever infested Sanmin District, where its salinity will kill mosquito larvae.

The water is 30 practical salinity units, which is sufficient to maximize the mortality rate of vector mosquitoes.

The department believes that the saltwater will achieve its desired effect of killing mosquitoes while lowering environmental damage when compared to insecticides.

I believe that organic phosphates absolutely are more harmful to the environment than saltwater. We are pioneers of this method, and we anxiously await results of this effective testing.

But mosquito expert Lien Jhih-ching has his doubts. Lien says that the Aedes mosquito, which transmits dengue fever, tends to lay eggs in stagnant water, not gutters, and that the best method to prevent its spread is to rid the environment of containers that fill with water.

高雄滅蚊奇招 引海水"鹹死"孑孓

高雄市登革熱病例,到昨天已經破萬例,高雄市府創全球先例祭出"海水殺蚊"新招,要引海水進入排水溝來「鹹死」蚊子幼蟲孑孓。

五噸水車的大型吸水管,放入前鎮漁港內,不斷把海水抽進儲水槽內。

這批海水,被注入至登革熱疫情嚴重的三民區水溝內,用意是要鹹死蚊子幼蟲孑孓。

“鹽度都到達30PSU的濃度,所以對病媒蚊的致死率,可以達到最高效果”

衛生局認為,引用海水不但能達到效果,相較之前的噴藥作法,也能降低對生態的威脅。

“(噴藥用)有機磷對環境生態的傷害,我想絕對大於海水,用全世界率先的一個方法,用一個有效的測試,我們大家都非常期待”

不過這樣的作法會有多少成效引來質疑,被譽為蚊子博士的連日清表示,登革熱主要病媒埃及斑蚊很少生長在水溝,多是在積水處產卵繁殖,還是清除積水比較實在。
