Taipower seeking a 7% price hike to reflect rise of global crude (2018/08/09)

Consumers have only just begun to feel the effects of summer power prices, and already Taipower wants to increase rates even more. Taipower says it wants a 7% increase to power prices to reflect a rise in global fuel prices.

This dim-sum restaurant consumes a great deal of electricity. Besides the lights and air-conditioners, there are over 20 refrigerators that run 24/7. Power consumption tops 1,000 kilowatt hours a month, and the summer bill comes to NT$60,000. Hearing that power prices could go up, the restaurant's proprietor says he can't handle it.

    Cheng Ren-tsai
    Restaurant owner
Rates go up in the summer and then in the winter too. I don't understand why the government has to increase prices at times like this. For ordinary folks and for business owners too, the situation makes you feel quite helpless.

Summer price hikes have only just taken effect and already Taipower has put in a request to increase rates, pointing to a rise in global fuel prices. In the first half of the year, Taipower posted losses of NT$24 billion, with an extra NT$40 billion in fuel expenses. Taipower said it will request a 7% increase, or NT$0.18 more per average Kw/hour, when September's electricity price review committee convenes.

    Voice of Hsu Tsao-hua
    Taipower spokesperson
Of course we hope for sustainable operations and for a price that reflects global prices. Taipower will prepare all relevant materials on cost so that the rate review committee can make their decision.

To keep a potential power price hike from pushing up consumer prices, the rate review committee is likely to dip into the price-stability fund when the time comes to ease the effects of an adjustment.
