Vincent Chao posted to Washington as political section chief (2019/01/10)

Vincent Chao shot to local fame in 2012, after serving as interpreter at Tsai Ing-wen's press conference following the presidential election. He has been posted to Washington as the political section chief at Taiwan's de facto embassy. The appointment has drawn criticism from both pan-blue and pan-green legislators, who say he is unqualified.

Critics complain that the 30-year-old has limited experience in international diplomacy. Some reports state that Foreign Minister Joseph Wu had initially wanted to install Chao as Taiwan's deputy representative to the U.S., but that the proposal was rejected by President Tsai Ing-wen.
