361 Wuhan evacuees released after completing 14-day quarantine (2020/03/25)

The 300-plus people repatriated from Wuhan city have been released from quarantine with a clean bill of health. The evacuees were in high spirits as they reunited with their friends and family. One said she was eager to doing some grocery shopping, while another looked forward to going back to school. There are still several hundred Taiwanese stranded in the city of Wuhan. On Wednesday, the head of a Taiwan business group called on the government to arrange another round of repatriation.

They wave happily from the bus. Although they are wearing face masks, it’s evident they’re in high spirits. The 361 Wuhan evacuees are all free to leave, after 14 days in isolation.

Alice
Returnee
I was there on the first day, on Jan. 22 and 23, when they closed off Wuhan. I haven’t been able to go out. Today is my first time seeing the outside world. I was so excited I couldn’t sleep last night.

Ms. Wang
Evacuee
My classmates all had my contact information. They kept in touch with me and told me all about what was going on at university. I’m very happy. I’ll finally be able to meet up with them.

Evacuee
The first thing I’m going to do is go to the market and do some shopping.

The 361 passengers returned to Taiwan on a charter flight on March 10. Two of them developed a fever at one point, but each later tested negative for the virus twice. As for the remaining evacuees, the Central Epidemic Command Center said their conditions were more stable than those of the February evacuees, meaning one round of testing was enough. On Wednesday, evacuees had good things to say about their living quarters in confinement.

Ms. Jiang
Evacuee
Of course I’m very thankful. Chen Shih-chung is really an Iron Man, the next-generation Iron Man. He came to inspect the conditions. He offered us a great deal of comfort.

The National Immigration Agency says 1,329 Taiwanese are still stranded in the Chinese province of Hubei. Taiwan business association head Hsu Cheng-wen says that includes 152 students and seven pregnant women. He made an appeal for a third repatriation flight.

Can there be another charter flight? It could be two planes, just like in this second evacuation. One from China Airlines and one from China Eastern.

Some Taiwanese in Hubei have made videos calling on the government to help them. Some are even posting their body temperature readings online every day. They all say they want to come home as soon as possible.
