Day Trading Tax Cut Falls Flat (2017/01/03)

The Taiex closed up 19.38 points on 2017’s first day of trading, but turnover remained low at only NT$45.2 billion, despite a new cut in transaction tax for day trading designed to boost volumes.

Large-cap stocks such as TSMC and Largan Precision, currently the highest value stock on the market by share price, defended their small gains for the day, while panel makers such as AUO and Innolux saw their stock rise on the back of a boost in buying sentiment. Shipping company stocks also saw gains, with Evergreen jumping 4 percent and Yang Ming up by 3.5 percent. Gaming companies, meanwhile, continued their recent strong performance.
