Warning issued to parents regarding children’s addiction to mobile phones (2011/12/21)

A local children’s welfare foundation is warning of the dangers of children having a mobile phone of their own. While many parents like to keep track of their children by giving them a phone, many issues arise, such as unexplainably high bills or inappropriate games on the devices. The foundation called for mobile phone companies to take social responsibility for the problems.

The Children’s Welfare League Foundation conducted a survey of students from fifth year in elementary school to second year in junior-high. It found 62 percent of the students surveyed have their own mobile phone. Of those, almost 60 percent spend less than 5 minutes talking on the phone each day. Mostly, they use the phone to listen to music, take photos, play games, and surf the web.

Parent
In my daughter’s class at school, some of her classmates will secretly send text messages. Or, they take photos, and then upload the photos to Facebook. Stuff like that.

Parent
I don’t know why but there are some strange games where they torture or hit cats. I think they are a little inappropriate.

The foundation says it found that about 40 percent of the children displayed symptoms of possible addiction to their mobile phones. They called on mobile phone companies to place controls on some of the phones’ features.

Some of these major mobile phone companies should start to take social responsibility. In terms of the use of mobile phones by minors we hope they will install filtering features. In terms of charges and billing, I think there should be limits.

The foundation said parents should agree to a set of rules for mobile phone use with their children and keep an eye on their children’s use of the phones.
