Evidence grows that loss of smell is a symptom of COVID-19, say doctors (2020/03/25)

Doctors are warning that losing your sense of smell could be a sign of carrying the new coronavirus. Many people with mild symptoms of COVID-19 are unable to get tested. People must rely on self-isolation if they develop common cold symptoms, just in case. But doctors say evidence is mounting that being unable to smell might be a good indicator that it is COVID-19. French professional basketball player Rudy Gobert has been diagnosed with the virus. He tweeted earlier this week to say he’d been without his sense of smell for four days.

Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert is the first NBA player to be diagnosed with COVID-19. His infection led the NBA to suspend all its games on March 12. Now Gobert has spoken up about a new olfactory symptom.

He tweeted from isolation to check whether losing his sense of taste and smell could be linked to the virus.

The virus reproduces in the nose, throat and oral cavity and on the tongue. That could damage the receptors or the peripheral nerves, meaning that sensations can’t be transmitted. This rarely happens with other viruses. There was a recent report suggesting COVID-19 can infect nerves, causing encephalitis or meningitis. As infections increase, it is possible that less common symptoms will start to appear.

There are five imported cases of COVID-19 in Taiwan who are reporting a loss of taste and smell. Twenty percent of patients in Korea report the same phenomenon. Some doctors say it should be officially investigated as a symptom.

It could be because the virus is mutating. At present I haven’t seen reports concerning this. We should tell frontline doctors to pay close attention to this question when diagnosing patients.

Many patients have mild symptoms or are completely asymptomatic, and spread the virus in their community unawares. Determining if the loss of smell is a definite symptom could help the public self-diagnose quicker, and isolate themselves as soon as possible.
