A pivotal figure in Taiwan's transition from authoritarianism to democracy was former President Lee Teng-hui. According to the survey, more than 75% approve of Lee's contributions to freedom of speech and his Taiwanization policies. When asked whether Lee deserved his title of "Mr. Democracy," 76.1% responded in the affirmative. Another 70.9% of respondents say they support further constitutional reform.
Ho Ming-sho NTU Department of Sociology When evaluating Lee Teng-hui, 83% said they approved of Lee's democratic reforms and 76% approved his push for democratization. We have a shared collective memory. I think that for a political community, that is very important. It's also a good thing.
Lee passed away last year, but his legacy continues as one of Taiwan's earliest advocates for a free democracy.
