Public looks for best vantage points to view New Year’s Eve fireworks (2011/12/26)

Many of Taipei’s citizens are considering where to go to get the best view of this year’s New Year’s Eve fireworks. With strong northeasterly winds expected for New Year’s Eve on Saturday, the best view is expected to be upwind of Taipei 101’s fireworks display. And, as in years gone by, Taipei MRT will run throughout the night to accommodate the crowds that are expected to gather around Taipei 101.

Elephant Mountain has long been considered the best site for watching the fireworks in Taipei. Elephant Mountain’s proximity to Taipei 101 means that the view will almost always be very clear.

But, this year, meteorologists predict that northeasterly winds on Dec. 31 will mean that areas such as Neihu and Dazi, which will be upwind, may be the best areas for fireworks-watching. Those south of Keelung and Xinyi roads may get a view of nothing but smoke.

In order to relieve traffic congestion and provide transportation in the early hours of the New Year, rail services will operate till 4 am, with an extra 24 services. The Maokong Gondola will operate until 2 am for those who wish to view fireworks from the vantage points in the hills of southern Taipei. The Taipei MRT will operate continuously for 42 hours, from 6 am on Dec 31 to midnight on Jan 2. However, trains will not stop at Taipei City Hall Station, and the only public transportation to the area will be provided by shuttle buses.

Because the inside of the MRT station will become full to overflowing, we hope that people will take one of our buses running on five different routes.

The first rays of light on New Year’s Day will be on Orchid Island and at Sansiantai in Taitung, where the sunrise will be visible from 6:35 am.
