Donors raise NT$510,000 to help Ethiopian student pay medical bills (2020/03/25)

An Ethiopian exchange student is thanking Taiwan donors for helping her pay a 1.22 million NT hospital bill. Earlier this month, the National Chung Hsing University student developed a deep vein blood clot in her leg. The dangerous condition forced her to undergo emergency surgery at Taiwan’s China Medical University Hospital.

The operation saved her life, but it racked up an astronomical bill because the student didn’t have Taiwan health insurance. After hearing of her situation from the Taichung Social Affairs Bureau, the Taiwan chapter of the charity group Kiwanis International jumped into action. In just one week, the group raised NT$510,000 to help offset the bill.
