    Tsai pledges to reform TRA after Taroko rail accident (2021/04/07)

    In the wake of last Friday's deadly train crash, calls are growing for reforming the Taiwan Railways Administration. On Wednesday, lawmakers blasted the 70-year-old railway operator for its bureaucratic culture and lackadaisical approach to safety. Speaking at the DPP headquarters, President Tsai Ing-wen vowed a sweeping overhaul of the TRA's work culture and to improve its bottom line.

    The atmosphere was somber at the DPP Central Standing Committee meeting on Wednesday, as officials observed a moment of silence for the victims of the Taroko Express crash. President Tsai pledged to reform the TRA.

    Reforming the TRA is a necessary step. Currently the main task is to completely resolve the problems with the TRA’s organizational culture. Secondly we have to work toward addressing the TRA’s longstanding financial losses.

    The first order of business is improving the culture and tackling the rail operator’s billions of dollars of debt. Then it’s revisiting the question of whether the TRA should be privatized. Tsai said her administration was determined to reform the TRA.

    Do not doubt the government’s commitment to reform. Over these past five years of our administration, the government has carried out many reforms successfully, demonstrating that we are not afraid of tackling touch issues in the course of reform. This is the attitude we will have when dealing with the TRA. All the people of Taiwan deserve to have a safe way to get home. Reforming the TRA is our unshirkable responsibility.

    Calls for a rehaul are also ringing in the Legislative Yuan.

    I believe the task force can be established under the Executive Yuan. Its work can be led by the Executive Yuan, with participation across government departments.

    Ruling and opposition lawmakers pushed government officials for the truth of what caused the crash. In the wake of the deadly rail accident, TRA is facing a chorus of calls for change.

    誓言進行台鐵改革 蔡總統:首要解決組織文化

    台鐵太魯閣號事故,造成嚴重傷亡,社會再掀對台鐵的檢討聲浪,不少人建議台鐵公司化。總統蔡英文今天出席民進黨中常會,率領黨公職為傷亡者默哀祈福,也宣示「改革台鐵勢在必行」,請大家不必懷疑政府的決心,而首要工作就是解決組織文化的問題、以及長期虧損的財務,之後再討論是否要公司化。

    民進黨中常會氣氛沉重,全體起立為太魯閣號事故傷亡者默哀祈福,總統蔡英文表情凝重,誓言進行台鐵改革。

    “改革台鐵,勢在必行。目前,最首要的工作,就是要徹底解決台鐵組織文化的問題;第二,要努力解決,台鐵長期虧損的財務。”

    先革新組織文化,改善四千多億的負債和年年增加的虧損,再來討論台鐵如何永續經營、是否要公司化。訂定台鐵改革目標後,總統宣示政府的決心。

    “請大家不必懷疑政府改革的決心。這五年來政府的施政,許多改革成果一一展現,證明了我們從來沒有害怕,碰觸艱難的改革議題。對於台鐵,我的態度更是如此。台灣各地的民眾,都值得擁有一條安全回家的路。改革台鐵,我們責無旁貸。”

    改革台鐵聲浪起,因為連民進黨自家立委都看不下去。

    朝野急著追真相,台鐵搖搖欲墜的百年招牌,在太魯閣號事故慘痛教訓下,期待有脫胎換骨的一天。
