Opposition supporters express ‘fury’ toward Ma administration policies (2013/01/13)

The DPP held a massive rally today. Tens of thousands of protesters paraded then gathered in front of the Presidential Office to express their anger toward President Ma Ying-jeou’s policies. They joined party heavyweights in calling for a change of course from the government.

At today’s “Fury” rally the DPP urged the government to boost the economy, hold a national affairs conference and reshuffle the Cabinet. Party leaders turned out in force, including Frank Hsieh, Annette Lu, Yu Shyi-kun and Tsai Ing-wen. They appeared together at the start of the rally to show solidarity.

The purpose of the rally was for the demonstrators to tell their demands to the president. Ma may have heard, but he didn’t respond. He did not make any public appearances in the afternoon, instead staying in his office to work.

    Former DPP Chairwoman
Looking over documents is one thing, but you have to make a concerted effort to understand what the people want, says former DPP Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen. I don’t think looking over documents allows you to achieve this. It also doesn’t put you in a position to make the best decisions.

The DPP estimates that 150,000 people crowded onto Ketagalan Boulevard for the rally. If Ma doesn’t meet the party’s demands, former Premier Frank Hsieh promises an even stronger response.

    Former Premier
If he doesn’t listen, we must go a step further, says Hsieh. If lawmakers abuse their power by using superior numbers to oppose us, we should dismiss them. If the problem is the president and not the Legislature, then we should we should impeach him. It’s a difficult challenge that we must undertake.

    Huang Kun-huei
    TSU Chairman
People cannot accept Ma Ying-jeou’s poor performance, says TSU Chairman Huang Kun-huei. How come he still doesn’t take action? He stubbornly persists in his ways. Some lawmakers only follow the president’s wishes, not the people’s wishes. These lawmakers should be dismissed.

The rally lasted from 2 to 10pm.
