Makeup day on Jan. 19 for office workers, not students (2019/01/10)

Next week, employees will have to head to work as usual on a Saturday. The extra work day will be applied next month to give workers an extra day off for Lunar New Year. The extra workday on Jan. 19 applies to employees only, not students.

Next Saturday, Jan. 19, it will be business as usual at offices across Taiwan. This extra day of work will be applied to give an extra day off on Friday, Feb. 8.

    Member of the public
I think we are making up for work missed on the fourth day of the Lunar New Year.

This year, the statutory public holiday for the Lunar New Year is four days long, from Monday, Feb. 4 to Thursday, Feb. 7. Friday, Feb. 8 is not a public holiday, but employees can take the day off if they work an extra day in January. Factoring in weekends, this arrangement extends the Lunar New Year break to nine days.

But next Saturday's makeup day is for grown-ups only. Next weekend, schools will still be out on winter break, so the kids can stay home and sleep in.
