Price of lamb reaches 20 year high as meats grow dearer across the board (2021/01/13)

As the Lunar New Year approaches, many of us will be cooking up delicious feasts with our loved ones. But meat prices are rising, and the price of lamb in particular has hit its highest point in decades. Restaurants say meat is now so pricey that customers will soon see the effect on their pockets.

Diners dip slices of lamb in the hotpot for a moment, then pop them in their mouths. It's the perfect feast for a winter's day.

With the recent cold weather, Taiwan's appetite for hearty winter fare has grown. Meat sales have gone up, including beef, chicken and mutton. A chicken leg that once cost NT$110 is now NT$190. Lamb prices are soaring. An average wholesale price of NT$280 per kilogram is now pushing up to NT$400, the highest price in 20 years. Restaurateurs say it's a threat to their business.

It's winter now and especially with these cold spells one after another, it's pushed up demand for lamb. It used to be NT$280 or NT$290 per kilogram. Now it's up to NT$380.

Many things like meats and vegetables are rising in price, actually, sometimes by as much as 10 or 20% - quite a lot.

As we approach the Lunar New Year, demand for hearty meals will keep growing. Restaurateurs fear that prices will go up yet more - and that might get passed onto customers.
