Kim Jong-il’s passing recalls Chiang Kai-shek (2011/12/21)

North Korea has been in the throes of apparent grief since the passing of dictator Kim Jong-il. The Taiwanese public should be no stranger to the scene, as the passing of Chiang Kai-shek in 1975 also saw similar outpourings. After Chiang’s death, Taiwan began its road to democratization but North Korea is still faithful to its “Dear Leader.”

When Chiang Kai-shek passed away, the political atmosphere in Taiwan at the time was similar to North Korea today. Long term habitation in that kind of environment makes one begin to see political leaders as parents. In some ways, patriarchal political models often result in this kind of collective psychology.
